The Animal Totems are magical animals that serve as the chosen friends to certain children. They give magical powers to people, transforming them into Noctambules-masques.
They are the minor protagonists of Les Pyjamasques picture book series. The main animal totems are Yahto the Tiger (a.k.a. Totem Cat), Oolgee the Owl (Totem Owl) and Chu'a the lizard (Totem Lizard).
Since the dawn of time, it has been said that every child has a animal totem. When midnight came, these fabulous animals came down from the stars and chased nightmares. The moon guided them like a beacon. So, they went to the children they had chosen as friends.
The animal totems could visit the dreams of the children. They would sing magic songs to bring them happiness and give them power that would serve them later.
They can sing songs that will allow them to bring happiness to children, they can also repel nightmares away. And wrap children in magical costumes that is based on the animal totem's appearance and abilities. The animal totems also have the ability to talk.
In their first appearance, the Animal Totems were originally able to protect Les Pyjamasques by using the attacks that is based on the real animal they are characterized to look like. Initially, they didn't have the ability to wrap children in magical costumes that is based on the totem's appearance.
The Animal Totems are shown to be quite friendly and protective towards the children they have chosen as friends, and promised to always be with them, even when they are in adulthood.
The animal totems will take in the form of various animals, consisting of a cat (originally a tiger), owl, lizard, reindeer, fox and unicorn.
In their first appearance, the animal totems are portrayed to look more realistic than their later appearances.
